Waste Management
Regulated Waste Management
Various operations in NJIT laboratories and shops result in the generation of regulated waste materials. There are a variety of Federal and State regulations and statutes that govern the manner in which regulated waste materials are characterized, stored, transported, and disposed. Principal among them are:
- Resource Conservation and Recovery Act - RCRA (40 CFR parts 260 to 273) which applies to hazardous chemical waste management.
- New Jersey Comprehensive Regulated Medical Waste Management Act (N.J.S.A. 13:1E-48.1) and the New Jersey medical waste regulations (N.J.A.C. Subchapter 7:26-3A) which applies to biological waste management.
- Program-Specific Guidance About Academic, Research and Development, and Other Licenses of Limited Scope (NUREG-1556, Volume 7, Rev. 1) which applies to radioactive waste management.
- Standards for the Management of Class D Universal Waste (N.J.A.C. Subchapter 7: 26A-7.1 to 26A-7.9) which applies to universal waste management.
The resources below are intended to assist NJIT personnel in properly managing regulated waste materials generated in their respective areas.
